In a spectacular example of fickle government overreach, the FAA has announced a new bureaucratic boondoggle (aka, a policy) that requires a letter of deviation authority (LODA) for any compensated training given or received in an Experimental, Primary, or Limited category aircraft. The new requirement – which does exactly nothing to contribute to safety but in fact serves to detract from it – reverses a long-standing, common-sense policy that allowed an individual flight instructor to charge for training a private owner, flying club member, or lessee. Not anymore. Gotta file paperwork and receive special permission to do that. Probably need to have it even if the instruction is free. After all, how might you prove some form of compensation or favor was not given?
