Breakfast served 8:30-9:30 followed by our Meeting 10:00 to noon(ish)

Robert “Hoot” Gibson will present

Robert “Hoot” Gibson started flying with his father in the family Bonanza.  At age 10, his father moved the throw-over yoke to the right side and told Hoot, “You make the takeoff.”  He went on to solo at 16 and got his private certificate at 17.  He completed college with an Aeronautical Engineering degree and began Naval Flight Training in 1969.  His first assignment was to the F-4.  After two tours flying off aircraft carriers in the South China Sea, he was selected to the first class of pilots to be trained on the F-14 Tomcat. A third Southeast Asia tour ended with an opportunity to attend Naval Test Pilot School at Maryland’s Patuxent River Air Station.  After completing test pilot school, he sent in the paperwork to NASA and was selected as an astronaut in the first class being formed for the Space Shuttle operations.  During his tenure at NASA, he served as Chief of the Astronaut Office.  He flew a total of five Shuttle Missions with the last four as Commander.  Hoot became active in Reno Racing and won the Unlimited Gold Race in 2015 flying the P-51 “Strega”.  Throughout this long career in Aviation and Space, he has enjoyed flying his two aircraft – a Beechcraft Bonanza and a Cassutt Formula One Racer.
