Raised in Hartley, TX 70 miles north of Amarillo
Attended Texas Tech University, Lubbock
Moved to Dallas in '72, got pilot's license in 1980, Addison airport. Solo Arlington '72. Built first Long-EZ, first flight July 5, 1984.
Met future wife Diane in Dallas in '85. Moved to Palm Beach, FL, started second EZ. Started my business, Custom Composites, LLC. Moved to Fairfax, VA. First flight Warrenton airport, July 5, 1993.
Moved to Mattituck, NY (yes, where the world renowned engine overhaul shop was located) where my wife was originally from. Acquired a large hangar at KHWV in Shirley, NY. Specialized in designing and manufacturing specialty systems for the Vari-eze, Long-EZ, and Cozy aircraft including electric pitch trim system, electric speedbrake system, nose wheel friction system. Manufactured "Hershey Kiss" style carbon fiber spinners, cowlings, wheel pants, and strake leading edges. These parts were sold all over the world on my website, www.long-ez.com.. A friend took over the business several years ago and it still is going strong.
Published hundreds of "how to" articles in the Central States canard newsletter including methods of finishing fiberglass structured aircraft and other helpful tips.
Due to my association with the crew at Mattituck over the years and having my own maintenance business, I became proficient at Lycoming engine care and feeding.
Also during this time I became the road technician for the Northern Lights Aerobatic Team out of Quebec, CA in 1998. In 2000, I joined Michael Mancuso Airshows as mechanic on the Klein Tools Special Extra 300. Klein Tools was a sponsor of the Indy Racing League and became the league's official airshow. Michael flew in all of the prerace activities for several years..
Moved on to become a specialist in Light Sport aircraft for Mid Island Air Service, my landlord at HWV. Acquired certification as a Rotax 912-914 Heavy Mechanic. Later became Director of Maintenance and Assistant General Manager of Mid Island Flight School, one of the largest in the Northeast with over 30 aircraft from C-152's to light twins in the school. Part time I was an Airframe and Powerplant instructor at Wilson Tech, an adult ed private school at Farmingdale airport, also known as Republic. This is the site where Republic Aircraft were manufactured, one of the earliest was the famous P-47 Thunderbolt. Later came the F-84 and F-85 Thunderbolt affectionately called the "Thud". The last aircraft that rolled off the lines there in the '80's were the famous A-10 Thunderbolt II. Not far from Republic is Mitchell Field, the site where Lindbergh launched in the Spirit of St. Louis on his flight to Paris.
I left Mid Island and went to work for Talon Air Jets, a luxury jet charter service based at Republic where I worked until 2017 as the manager of their Structures deparment. Part time I was performing retail annuals for Mid Island as well.
